Malta’s Digital Seaman’s Record Book – A Step Forward for the Maritime Industry

Digitalisation is changing the way the maritime industry operates, and Malta’s latest initiative is another example of how essential services are adapting to the needs of an increasingly international sector.

The Malta Ship Registry has launched a Digital Seaman’s Record Book, replacing the traditional physical document with a secure digital credential that seafarers can access through a personal digital wallet.

While this may seem like a small administrative change, it addresses a practical challenge for people whose work takes them across vessels, ports and countries. Having access to an official record of sea service without relying on a physical document can make a real difference to seafarers working away from home.

Making Everyday Processes Simpler

The Digital Seaman’s Record Book allows seafarers to access and manage their service records digitally. Entries can be submitted for authentication by the vessel’s Master or other authorised officers, as applicable, helping to simplify the process of maintaining official records.

The move also supports more efficient verification. Digital credentials can be checked electronically, helping relevant authorities and employers confirm the authenticity of records when required.

For seafarers, this means easier access to an important professional document. For the wider maritime industry, it reflects a broader shift towards more accessible, secure and efficient administrative processes.

Supporting the Continued Development of Malta’s Maritime Industry

At BDO Malta, we recognise the importance of developments that help keep Malta’s maritime sector competitive and responsive to the needs of international business.

As the industry evolves, shipowners, operators and maritime service providers must also consider how regulatory developments, changing administrative requirements and new technologies affect their operations.

Keeping informed of these changes is an important part of making sound business decisions and identifying opportunities for improvement.
