MGA’s Self-Assessment Tool for Gambling Habits

The Malta Gaming Authority (MGA) has introduced a new Self-Assessment Tool to help players reflect on their gambling habits and assess their level of risk. Available for free in both English and Maltese, the anonymous tool is based on the Problem Gambling Severity Index (PGSI) and was developed in collaboration with local organisations including Sedqa, Caritas Malta, OASI Foundation, and the Responsible Gaming Foundation.

The tool guides users through a short questionnaire of 9 questions that evaluates the impact of gambling on their lives. Results provide an indication of potential risk and direct users to relevant support services if needed. It also promotes responsible gambling measures such as setting limits and taking breaks.

The Importance of Self-Awareness

Addiction often develops gradually, making self-awareness crucial in recognising early warning signs. Regular self-reflection allows individuals to spot unhealthy patterns before they escalate, seek help sooner, and take control of their behaviour.

Being self-aware reduces shame, empowers personal responsibility, and helps prevent relapse by encouraging ongoing monitoring and accountability.

A Step Toward Safer Gambling

The MGA’s new self-assessment tool is a progressive step toward more proactive, compassionate, and accessible approaches to gambling harm in Malta. By giving players a confidential, structured way to reflect on their gambling habits, it helps bridge the gap between denial and help-seeking.

However, the tool’s true power lies in what comes next: self-awareness, and the willingness to act on it. Recognizing addictive patterns early, owning one’s behaviour, reducing shame, and engaging help - these are the heart of meaningful change. For anyone concerned about their gambling or that of a loved one, using such a tool may be the first step toward recovery and healthier choices.
