BDO Malta celebrates World Intellectual Property Day

BDO Malta celebrates World Intellectual Property Day

World Intellectual Property Day is celebrated every year on April 26th to promote the importance and significance of protecting intellectual property rights to foster creativity and encourage innovation.

In 2000, the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) established World Intellectual Property Day in order to raise worldwide recognition of intellectual property.

What is intellectual property (IP)?

Intellectual property fundamentally consists of ideas and their expression, such as inventions, literary and artistic works, designs, images, marks, names and other devices that may be protected by patents, copyrights, trademarks and other forms of legal protection. The protection of intellectual property rights provides the holders with unique acknowledgement and legal protection, which ultimately contributes to economic, socialt, and cultural development around the world.

As a result of this legal protection, the holders of intellectual property are granted the sole legal right to authorise third parties to use their property and derive financial benefit from their assets. These profits, known as royalties, generate potential for economic growth and new job opportunities.
