It is without any doubt that the COVID-19 pandemic contributed to the long-term boost in remote working as it proved that the introduction of “working from home measures” do not harm productivity in any manner. Applicants would need to provide sufficient proof that they either work for an employer registered outside of Malta, conduct business activity for a company registered outside of Malta, for which they are partners or shareholders, or offer freelance or consulting services to clients whose permanent establishments are located in a foreign jurisdiction.

An application fee of €300 shall be charged upon the application of this new visa scheme. Applicants shall also need to prove that they have a valid health insurance which covers all risks in Malta, they are holders of a valid travel document, they are currently renting a property in Malta or have acquired a property in Malta and they should also satisfy the applicable due diligence checks. Digital nomads who apply whilst they are still located outside of Malta would be allowed time to get the necessary documentation in order once they are in the country as they would be issued with an initial visa which would be valid for a period of 180 days. Following that, the digital nomad would be able to apply for a renewable ´Nomad Residence Permit’ which would be valid for a period of one year.

The legal framework for this new visa scheme is expected to be issued in the next weeks. Malta is already considered as a ‘go-to destination’ due to its safe environment, healthcare and education system. This new visa scheme shall surely attract more business owners with a flair for travelling and discover new cultures.
