The enthusiasm of all the attendees and exhibitors could be felt as soon as we entered the venue of the Blockchain Europe Expo 2018.

Josef Mercieca (Tax Partner at BDO Malta) and myself carried the Maltese flag as we were present to explain to all delegates what our jurisdiction has to offer to blockchain-related projects that would like to set up in a crypto-friendly environment. During the two day conference we joined the FinanceMalta team who had set up a stand which acted as the meeting point for investors and entrepreneurs alike.

A variety of topics were discussed with a huge interest coming from the recently passed legislation, a first for its kind in the industry, more specifically on the provisions found in the recently approved Virtual Financial Assets Act.

It quickly transpired that Malta has a competitive edge when compared to other jurisdictions and that investors are very interested in the idea of basing their operations from Malta. Apart from the legal certainty which will be achieved from the new laws, Malta is also placed in the right position to become known as the blockchain hub of the European Union. Credit institutions are also keen to listen to this emerging industry which is paving the way for this disruptive technology to change the approach of how businesses and individuals operate in their day to day life.

Overall, the trip was an extremely positive experience and I am sure it will not be the last we attend. The firm has big plans coming up in the industry, so stay tuned for further news.
